02/11/08   Ethical Shell Out »

This is a true story, and awfully common. Just as in every social circle, I have a token green friend who harps on about being ethical and trying to save the planet whilst simultaneously criticising my viewpoint of apathy. The same friend then threw a wobbly over the lack of cheap petrol from Shell – er, what?

In the grand scheme of things unethical petrol is unavoidable, but come on! Can I trust you all to type “shell unethical” in Google? Will you all be OK sifting through the three-hundred thousand odd results? When an organisation is corrupt it’s compared to one of four corporations: McDonald’s, Coca Cola, Nike and Shell.

This is the reason I won’t bend to the ethical paraphenelia. The day the expectations for being green and ethical change so the entire facade isn’t a condescending brew of hypocrisy and malable ignorance, is the day I eat my own hat whilst perched naked atop a juggling giraffe with Tourette’s.

I am in a tricky spot, because I *do* enjoy being green, but I also don’t carry it out as well as I should. I suppose if I’ve learnt anything from the organic food buyers of northern Calgary, it is that I never want to become that pretentious. I want to enjoy life, and if a recycling bin is near by, I shall throw my juice container in it with pride. :P

I think there’s what people lack most when it comes to environmentalism is common sense. I’m going to use energy-saving lightbulbs, I’m going to recycle whatever I can, I purchase carbon credits whenever I fly, and I’m generally wise about little things like refilling bottles with water from the tap rather than continually buying new bottles.

I can’t, however, reduce my petrol consumption because in order to contribute to society and actually go to work rather than being on the dole, I need to use petrol and drive to get to work.

I’d like to imagine that’s the reasoning behind your friend’s actions – she does whatever she can, but there are certain things that are out of one’s control if you still want to be a valuable member of society.

Well just because you are in the non care generation and simply don´t care, or pretend that you don´t care?… doesn’t mean that you can have a go at people how actually try to give a fuck!

I would say that a very good thing your friend has don is to take the subject to you and you make a post about it! She obviously contributes and you as-well!!!!

I read a course now in “the global challenge” uni you should be there! you would laugh your ass off!
-Be a vegan and just take the train is the mentality of the students! It is very funny to see them all in action! and a bit sad!
